Brief Description |
The story of Co Ban Kiat Hardware (CBK)
is a narrative of resilience and national rebuilding, a journey that began in
1920 within the historic walls of Binondo. It started with the family
patriarch, Mr. Co Ban Kiat, who established a modest neighborhood hardware
store. Recognizing early on that the construction industry needed more than
just a retailer, he pioneered the "wholesale" and "buy and
sell" trade in the hardware business, laying the foundation for a
century-long legacy. At the very heart of their identity is an unshakeable
spirit of survival. When World War II struck Manila in 1945, the city was
reduced to rubble, and CBK was not spared. Yet, in the face of total
destruction, the company did not fold. They resumed business in a makeshift
shanty, devoting themselves to the massive effort of restoring the city. They
provided the essential materials needed for families to rebuild their homes
and lives. By 1949, their own building was reconstructed, symbolizing a
business that—like the city it served—had risen from the ashes to prosper
once more. This is a story of visionary evolution. After
incorporating in 1952, the company continued to expand, but a major shift
arrived with the fourth generation of leadership. Mr. Johnny Co Ban Kiat
understood that the market was changing. In the 1990s, he introduced a retail
concept that would democratize access to quality tools: the Hardware
Workshop. As the first retail hardware store of its kind, it moved beyond the
traditional trade model to reach households and home improvement enthusiasts
directly. This is a story of elevating standards. As
architectural trends shifted toward modern sophistication, CBK evolved again.
In 1996, they opened their first design center, Coby’s Design Center, in
Mandaluyong. This marked a leap from functional utility to global luxury,
offering innovative home solutions and premium architectural hardware to
hotels, offices, and modern residences. Today, the story of Co Ban Kiat Hardware is one of a
dynasty that thrives on the philosophy of its president: "Failure is
inevitable. You must learn to rise and thrive on each failure." It is a
promise that whether you are rebuilding a city or designing a luxury hotel,
you are supported by a partner with over 100 years of history, standing tall
on a foundation of grit and innovation. |
